Open coil has been around the longest. It consists of a series of springs or metal coils that are wrapped in a circular fashion so that they have a bounce when you sit on them. And you dont sit on just one, there are rows of them that are tied together to create a mattress where the springs go up and down when you move. A typical double bed will have over 300 of them. Padding is then added in between and on top of the coils to give you a comfortable sleep. Pocket sprung is more recently developed. It takes the open coil idea but makes many more smaller springs and inserts each one into an individual pocket and then the pockets are all sewn together to make one mattress. Pocket sprung mattresses are sold based upon the number of pockets for the springs and usually you will see a number from 1,000 to 3,500, the more springs the smaller they are and you will have a finer adjustment to your body when you move in bed. Memory foam mattresses were invented to help the infirm that couldnt turn over in bed but they proved so comfortable that they are now available to the general public. They are made out of polyurethane and rated by density or how long it takes for the mattress to recover back to its original shape when you move on it. It can be warm as it cuddles you making it very cozy for colder climates. The final major mattress material is latex foam. Where memory foam is known for pressure relief and comfort, latex foam is known for durability and health since it is made of a more environmentally friendly fabric. Latex is from the rubber tree and a natural product. Due to its high cost most mattresses only have a few inches on top of the mattress that are pure latex.
